The Logic of the Cross

We usually follow the Revised Common Lectionary. Click on the link if you want to see what we'll be exploring in the weeks to come.

INVOCATION

O God, Wisdom of the universe,

you bear the pain of your people.

Grant us the gift of wisdom,

that we may discern your way

and live justly and graciously

amid the struggles of this world.

Amen.

SCRIPTURES & READINGS

1 Corinthians 1:18-27

TAKEAWAYS & COMMUNITY QUESTIONS

  • Too much of the time, the logic of this world and sadly the logic of Christians is to win. To avoid the sacrifice. To win the rhetorical battle. To own them…whoever them are. I decided to know nothing except the power of love demonstrated on a cross (Paul wrote). I came in weakness…to know nothing…except Christ, the cross, the logic of love. To be a holy fool.
  • What is the wisdom that is foolish?
  • What is the “foolishness” that is actually wise and beautiful and true?
What is that truth close to my heart which I am afraid to admit for fear of being misunderstood?
  • When are there times I want to explain myself, but they wouldn’t understand or they would think me strange?
  • Maybe that which looks foolish to people who don’t understand is the unique gift you have for others? May you find a safe place for it.
  • Helpful voices: “The logic of the cross is the logic of love and the logic of love clashes strongly with other logics we are exposed to daily which is why Paul uses the rhetorical technique of contrast so often to get our attention and clarify choices.” — Jaimie Clark-Soles
  • (We) do not (“die”) on the cross in order to “set up” the resurrection; (We) die on a cross because the willingness to give it all away is itself the original and ultimate creative act from which all being flows.” — Cynthia Bourgeault
  • “The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are things you get ashamed of, because words make them smaller. When they were in your head they were limitless; but when they come out they seem to be no bigger than normal things. But that's not all. The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried; they are clues that could guide your enemies to a prize they would love to steal. It's hard and painful for you to talk about these things ... and then people just look at you strangely. They haven't understood what you've said at all, or why you almost cried while you were saying it.” — Stephen King, The Body (Introduction)

BENEDICTION

You are God’s Child

Gifted with dreams and visions.

Upon you rests the grace of God like flames of fire.

Love and serve the Lord in the wildness of your being.

Practice Resurrection.

And may the deep peace of Christ be with you,

The strong arms of God sustain you,

And the glory of the Holy Spirit shine upon your face.

Amen.

Resource: 10% Happier Podcast

The title of this podcast is "How to avoid the toilet vortex of anxiety"...I mean, doesn't this title just say it all? We touched on worry during our service, let these thinkers be a resource to you.

Practice: Pay attention to tears

Once, I heard that one of the reasons people cry is when they see or experience sacrificial grace. It's like our very bodies know and yearn for it. Some of us cry often, while others of us can't remember the last time we cried. The actual production of tears is not the focus here, but you know that feeling you get when you are on the edge of crying? That emotional swell? Sometimes a movie can get us to this place...or a memory. Investigate that swell of emotion. What is the underlying root? Make it into some kind of prayer.

When you financially support Commonplace Church, you help cultivate a place where people are drawn to the transformative heart of Christ through hospitality, beauty, authenticity, belonging, and wholeness.

Our donation platform, Zeffy, does not charge us any fees (which is truly incredible). When you check out, Zeffy prompts you to donate to their cause, with a suggested amount. You can opt out, if you want, by clicking the dropdown box and selecting "Other". Then, just type in 0.

Thank you for the many ways you give to our beloved community.

Grace and Peace,

Katrina and Darren

Hello dear one. Remember, this Labor Day weekend, we are trying something new. We will not gather as a group on Sunday. We say it a lot that the hopeful fruit of what we do on Sunday is not just for that one hour on one day, but that it will spill over into our lives, into our homes, into our neighborhoods. So, this is one of the ways we are trying for that... Below, you will find some options for how to engage God over the weekend. You can do these on your own, or invite a friend or family...
